Stencils are designs which are cut from a number of materials, usually so that the design can be replicated easily. Stencils can consist of one layer or many.
In this example, the plaster beam was first wood grained and then a separate stencil was used to apply each color. The final step was to over coat the beam and stencil with a glaze.
